The tradition of making dessert Muscats in the inhospitably hot Rutherglen vineyards is, by Australian standards, ancient. In 1864, Timothy Stanton with his son John came from Suffolk and established a farm and vineyard. Norman Killeen married Joan Stanton and her farm in 1948, and their grandchildren now run the business. Their farmland was well chosen, a soil of free draining gravel lies above clay which traps the moisture the vines need at depth, out of the sun. Some of the current vines date back to the 1920s, and produce amongst the best fruit of the district. The wine is rich, and heavy, redolent of raisins but with the grapeyness of the Muscat shining through. Sometimes discribed as 'liquid Christmas Pudding' it pairs well with strong blue cheeses, ice cream, and even chocolate.
