Pinneau des Charentes is a delicious blend of grape-juice and Cognac, ignored, in general by the big producers. Production tends to be small scale and on an artisan basis, often sold only where a sign by the side of the road advertises the presence of a producer. The red version is very unusual indeed. Little is exported, so we are lucky to have this example. Unusual for Cognac, Château Montifaud grows grapes, distils and matures the final Cognac at the boundary between the Grande and Petite Champagne districts. Pinneau is usually drunk neat with ice, but it makes a nice long drink mixed with 2/3 tonic water or soda.
